Head of Junior Cricket Saqib Malik joins Spencer fulltime

We’re delighted that Saqib Malik who is our Head of Junior cricket has joined Spencer fulltime this month, adding to our dedicated club coach capacity. Already known to most across the club via his work with the younger age groups over the past few years, Saq’s arrival enables us to increase our summer holiday programme and in conjunction with Exec Head Coach Kiyo Jason, we will be announcing a revamped and increased winter programme shortly.

Saq is ideally suited to his role as he joined Spencer as an U7 himself in 2001 and progressed steadily through the club, including being part of the Surrey system alongside players such as England’s Dominic Sibley and wicketkeeper Michael Burgess who now plays alongside Sibley at Warwickshire. He names three highlights of his time at Spencer – making his Academy debut at just 14 playing alongside the then 1st team skipper Neil Baker, also a memorable game vs Banstead in 2016 when opening, he scored 59 in a game notable for Alex Rackow who made his first Spencer century scoring 123 – feats made more impressive by the quality of the Banstead bowling – not just the Surrey players Matt Dunn and Freddie Van Den Burgh but also future Aussie international quick Nathan Ellis. Saq went on to be 1st XI top run scorer that season playing a crucial part in a young team avoiding relegation.

In recent times he has also progressed through the coaching ranks, including his developing role with us including running our summer camps, he also did a stint at St. Pauls school and this year he completed his ECB Level 3 qualification.
