News: Of Spencer past and present

Roy Lewis

It’s with sadness that we report the death of Roy Lewis. Given the constant demographic changes locally over more than 50 years, there are few present members who knew Roy but for many in cricket across Surrey and beyond, for two decades he was Spencer, making us one of the top teams in the county

As the club’s history records, his 1st class career with Surrey (he played 38 matches) wasn’t what is could have been: ‘It seems he fell out of favour with the management – he was never one to doff his cap but spoke his mind at a time when some demanded unquestioning deference from players’. Surrey loss was Spencer’s massive gain as across 300 league matches from 1968 to 1990 he scored at an average of 43, and became the first player in the Surrey Championship to surpass 10,000 runs.

Current Spencer Adult Chair Khawar Saleem, who made his club debut under Roy said: ‘For many years across cricketing circles his name was synonymous with Spencer as Captain and superb batsmen. A great cricket man who loved the game and beneath the steely determination to win for his beloved club stories emerge of him taking younger players under his wing and teaching them how to really understand the game of cricket and its nuances. Batting with him was a masterclass, protective and encouraging while demanding high standards, chasing totals down was an art form. Simply a Spencer cricketing legend.’

We were fortunate to have been able to welcome Roy back to the Club last summer in a gathering of former players:

Our condolences to Roy’s family and friends.

Gus and Max

Our most recent Surrey player Gus Atkinson was originally pencilled to play in our 1stXI league opener this past weekend vs Beddington, he was a late call up to Surrey and took his chance in scoring his maiden 1st class 50 and taking 3 wickets in the County Championship win over Northants. In a nice piece of symmetry, our U16 player Max Hunt is now signed for Northants Academy and made his league debut in the Beddington match and mopped up their tail taking 4 quick wickets to finish things off.  Congrats also to Will De Cani and Toby Pratt who shared a 138 run opening partnership and also to new fast blower Olly Bocking who took a wicket with his first Spencer ball. The game was the first ever league white ball match at Fieldview with the team wearing the new Savills kit for the first time:
