Adults looking to round off 150th season in style

Women’s 2nd XI celebrate winning the league

Another remarkable weekend for our senior league sides as Saturday saw 5 wins from 5 and Sunday only 1 loss from another 5 fixtures. Unfortunately the loss was in the semi-final of the inter-league cup as our 1st XI lost narrowly away at Essex Prem side Brentwood but that certainly doesn’t overshadow their crucial victory the day before when travelling to Cranleigh and needing to beat the home team to retain any chance of promotion, they got over the line, winning by just 7 runs, Cranleigh having been at one stage 143-1 chasing just 225. We now trail Cranleigh by just 2 points with Guildford top 12 further ahead and with those teams also due to play each other next weekend, if we can close out the season with 3 more wins, it could be enough to go up.

The Women’s 1st XI returned to winning ways on Sunday, beating Ansty at home by 195 runs having amassed 336/7. This pulls them ahead of the opposition who are bottom of the table, occupying the one relegation spot. Yasmin Daswani top scored with 74, part of an opening stand of 124.

The remainder of the Saturday league sides are certainly doing their bit to make the 150th season special. With the 3rd XI already confirmed as champion of their Premiership, they continued on their winning ways beating Walton by 107 runs, with the experienced James Smith top scoring with 62. The 2nd XI, powered by a fine century from Tom Brammer beat Weybridge by 176 runs, Rahul Shah taking 5 for 34 as the opponents collapsed from 98-3 to 150 all out. Highlights of that innings here. With the Wimbledon 2nds losing, it means we are now 36 points clear at the top of the table needing probably only one win from the final three matches to secure the title.

Our Sharks team (so named because they play in the Surrey Cricket League rather than the Surrey Championship and are of a 3rd team type standard) beat bottom of the table Ottershaw by 8 wickets, Aymun Ali top scoring with 57*. They are now 2nd in the Premiership table which a crunch game vs top team Surrey Warriors next Saturday. Finally, the 4th XI also won by 8 wickets, Aditya Khairari top scoring with 70, as the team consolidated their position at the top of Division 4 East, 23 points clear, with perhaps 1 win from their final three also likely to see them Champions.

Not to be outshone, our Women’s 2nd XI also consolidated their position as champions of the Surrey Women’s Championship by beating Dulwich, Maia Lough top scored with 48*. Huge congratulations to skipper Alycia Jewes and her squad who are playing in a division comprised of other club’s 1st XI’s.

Also on Sunday, our friendly side the Earls won as did the Academy 2nd XI, rounding off an incredible weekend. What links all the teams is the mix of former juniors who have progressed through combined with other members who have chosen to make Spencer their home – together they are doing the club proud.
